The BitBox02 is made by Shift Crypto in Zurich and it is the hardware wallet we point people to when they say they are nervous about backing up a seed phrase. Its microSD backup is the easiest safety net in the market, its app is open source, and the Bitcoin Only edition runs some of the leanest firmware available. This review covers how it works day to day, what it does better than Ledger and Trezor, and where it falls behind.

Hardware

The BitBox02 is a small matte black bar with a USB-C plug on one end, a microSD slot on the other, and a thin OLED screen along the top. There are no buttons. You control it by tapping or sliding on capacitive sensors along the edges, which takes ten minutes to get used to and then feels natural. It has a Secure Element chip that protects the keys and the device password, and the firmware is signed and verified on every boot. It ships with a microSD card, an extension cable and a USB-A adapter.

The backup system

This is the BitBox02's best feature. During setup the device writes an encrypted copy of your wallet to the microSD card. That card plus your device password restores the wallet onto any BitBox02 in about a minute. New users get a working backup before they have written a single word down, which removes the most common way people lose crypto: a seed phrase that was never recorded properly.

The device also shows the standard 24 recovery words on demand, so you can make a steel backup that would restore into a Ledger, Trezor or any other BIP39 wallet. We recommend doing both: the card for convenience, the words on a Billfodl for permanence. Our BitBox02 setup guide walks through it.

Software

The BitBoxApp runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. It is simpler than Ledger Live and Trezor Suite, which is a compliment: there is nothing to sell you, no portfolio dashboard with ads, just accounts, send, receive and settings. It supports coin control for Bitcoin, connects through Tor, and can point at your own Bitcoin node. The whole stack, app and firmware, is open source and has been independently audited.

For advanced Bitcoin use it works with Electrum, Sparrow and Specter through the BitBoxBridge. On the Multi edition, Ethereum and tokens connect through MetaMask and Rabby.

Bitcoin Only or Multi

The Bitcoin Only edition runs firmware with every non Bitcoin feature compiled out. Less code means fewer places for a bug to hide, and Bitcoin maximalists value that. The Multi edition adds Ethereum, Litecoin, ERC-20 tokens and a few others. The hardware is identical and you can switch Multi to Bitcoin Only later, but not back. If you are unsure, buy Multi.

Where it wins

  • The microSD backup. No other mainstream wallet makes the first backup this hard to get wrong.
  • Fully open source firmware and app, with a Secure Element. Trezor's open source devices only recently added a Secure Element; Ledger's chip firmware is closed.
  • Swiss company with a long record and no customer data breach.
  • Quiet, honest software with no upsells.

Where it falls behind

  • Coin support is narrow. No Solana, Cardano, XRP or most smaller chains. If you hold a wide altcoin portfolio, look at Ledger, Trezor or SafePal.
  • No Bluetooth and no iPhone support. It is a desktop and Android device.
  • The touch sensors are an acquired taste, and the screen is small.
  • The microSD backup only restores into another BitBox02. Keep the words too.

Compared with the obvious alternatives

Against the Ledger Nano S Plus, the BitBox02 costs more than twice as much and supports far fewer coins, but it is open source and has the easier backup. Against the Trezor Safe 3, both are open source with a Secure Element; the Trezor is cheaper and covers more coins, the BitBox has the card backup and the tighter Bitcoin Only build. For a Bitcoin holder who values engineering over feature lists, the BitBox02 is the one we would choose.

Verdict

The BitBox02 is the hardware wallet for someone who holds Bitcoin, maybe some Ethereum, and wants a device built by people who clearly care about getting the details right. It is not the wallet for a thirty coin portfolio or for phone first use. At around $150 it is not the cheapest, but the backup design alone has saved customers of ours from mistakes that would have cost far more.
